Where is the Shapiro Multipurpose Room?

2nd floor of the Campus Center. Go up the stairs and make an immediate left turn—it’s the double doors right in front of you.

Note: To open the door, turn the knob and pull...or make sad faces until someone lets you in...

What do we learn?

We learn two dances in each lesson (45 minutes each), and spend two weeks on each set. The dances include regular smooth/latin steps (waltz, rumba, foxtrot, triple-step swing, tango, cha-cha) and “club” dances (hustle, night club two-step, salsa). By the end of each semester, you have a good foundation in a wide variety of dance styles!

Do I need experience?

Not at all! Most of our members first started dancing in college.

Do I need special shoes or clothes?

Nope. Comfy shoes  (no flip-flops) and clothes you can move in are all you need.

Guys, dress shoes are often the best choice for movement.

Ladies, heels can help focus your weight on the balls of the feet, but flats work too.

Some people wear just socks for better movement; do this at your own risk.

If you’re interested in buying discount ballroom shoes, check out our links.

Do I need a partner?

No. You’ll be switching around throughout the lesson, so you probably wouldn’t dance with them much anyway!

Can I join in the middle of the semester?

Yes! New members are always welcome, and all lessons are taught for beginners.

How much do the lessons cost?

Nothing! We’re fully funded by the Student Union, so our lessons are free!

Who can come to lessons?

All undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to attend.

Will this prepare me for dance competitions?

Not really. If you’re interested in competing, look into the Brandeis Ballroom Dance Team. Even so, Ballroom Club improves your dance skills whether you’re looking to compete or just having fun!

Can I get PE credit for this?

‘fraid not. However, PE26a Beginning Social Dance IS worth PE credit and reinforces the same steps!

I love Dancing with the Stars!

That isn’t a question, but a valid point. Come join Ballroom Dance Club so you can watch Dancing with the Stars and say “I can do that!”

Is there a listserve I can join?

Yes, in fact it is highly recommended that you join our listserve at ballroom@lists.brandeis.edu to stay updated on lessons and events!

I have another question, what do I do?!

Email Brette at bwillms@brandeis.edu, or ask your favorite club member!
